Driver Safety

As a driver, you may feel like you own the road. But this isn't the case, with pedestrians and cyclists having the right to use it just the same. Their safety is as much your responsibility as it is theirs. Understanding the rules of the road and how to share it with other users is key to being a responsible driver.

Driving Safe Around Cyclists

Ìý
  • Cyclists have the right to occupy vehicle lanes where there are no practical bike lane
  • Marked bike lanes are restricted to bicycle use only
Ìý
  • Only pass a cyclist when it is safe to do so, ensuring you give them at least one metre of space
Ìý
  • Always check your mirrors and shoulders prior to changing lanes, turning right and when exiting a parked vehicle

Safety Around Pedestrians And Intersections

At signalized intersections, pedestrians must only walk when signaled too
At unsignalized intersections, pedestrians must wait for vehicles to stop and yield prior to walkingÌý

Red Lights And Right Turns

  • Motorists must yield to cyclists and pedestrians when turning right on a red light
  • Pedestrians may have a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) that gives them a few second head start on vehicles waiting to move in the same direction, so watch out!
Some intersections may have No Right on Red signage indicating to drivers that they cannot turn right on a Red light
