Share the Road
Share the Road Nova Scotia is a community-based Share the Road awareness campaign for Nova Scotia. The goal of the campaign is to improve the public's knowledge and raise awareness of road safety by acknowledging the responsibilities user have based upon different modes of transportation - driving, wakling, and rolling!
How Can You Safely Share the Road
As a Pedestrian
- Pedestrians should only cross at signalized intersections during the 鈥渨alk鈥 signal or if at unsignalized intersections when the vehicle has enough time to property yield
- You should signal your intention to cross and ensure traffic has stopped
- Motorists are not required to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross illegally
- If there is no sidewalk, walk on the shoulder of the road facing traffic
Remember To Always Make Eye Contact Before Crossing The Street
As A Driver
- Cyclists have the right to occupy vehicle lanes where there are no practical bike lane
- Marked bike lanes are restricted to bicycle use only
- Only pass a cyclist when it is safe to do so, ensuring you give them at least one metre of space
- Always check your mirrors and shoulders prior to changing lanes, turning right and when exiting a parked vehicle
- At signalized intersections, pedestrians must only walk when signaled too and at unsignalized intersections, pedestrians must wait for vehicles to stop and yield prior to walking
As a Cyclist
- Cyclists must obey all rules of the road
- Cyclists are not restricted to bike lanes 鈥
- Make sure your bike is equipped with a bell, headlight and tail-light
- Wear an approved bicycle helmet
- Always ride in the same direction as traffic, unless indicated otherwise
- Ring your bell when passing pedestrians or other cyclists

Youth & Schoolzone Safety
- School zone speed limits are 30 km/h when approached by a 50 km/h limit
- Get the right kit for your kid, including helmet, and summer or winter clothes
- Consider using bike trailers or seats to get kids comfortable with traveling by bike
- Find the right bike for your kid, lighter weight is more fun
